Our Members:

Membership in GAYLAW is open to lawyers, law students, and other legal professionals without regard to age, race, religion, sex, color, national origin, ancestry, disability, political affiliation, sexual orientation, or transgender status. GAYLAW members include legal professionals from large law firms, solo and small practices, government agencies, non-profits, academia, and the judiciary. GAYLAW does not sell its membership list and will keep any member’s information confidential upon request.

Dues:

Membership dues support all GAYLAW activities and are due upon joining GAYLAW and at the beginning of every calendar year. Dues vary according to annual income or student status. Please consider joining as a “Sustaining Member” and/or making an additional donation to support GAYLAW’s programs and services. You may pay dues online or mail a check payable to GAYLAW and this form to P.O. Box 34072, Washington, DC 20043.

Student or annual income less than $40,000 $15.00/year
Annual income $40,000 to $70,000 inclusive $35.00/year
Annual Income more than $70,000 $50.00/year
Sustaining Member $150.00/year

Sustaining members receive a one-year membership; one ticket to the Holiday Gala; the option to be listed in the Holiday Gala’s event program and promotional material; and admission to the summer pool party.

Committees:

GAYLAW does not employ any staff and relies solely on the generosity of its volunteer members to support all its activities through one of its Committees. Members are encouraged to E-mail one of the Board or Committee members to learn about volunteer opportunities.

  • Programs / Socials - Organizes member socials and coordinates events with other professional organizations. Also, plans and organizes educational and legal programs for members and the community. Events@gaylaw.org

  • Communications - Writes, edits, and publishes news releases, web content and other material. Reviews GAYLAW’s use of media and makes suggestions to the Board of Directors about publicizing events and activities to members and the community. Communications@gaylaw.org

  • Law Student Outreach and Mentoring - Works with local law school GLBT organizations to develop student programs, including job workshops and other networking opportunities. Administers the "Mentor-Mentee" program, which pairs law students, law graduates and junior lawyers with experienced attorneys. LawStudents@gaylaw.org

  • Membership – Develops plans for recruiting and retaining members. Organizes the annual Membership Appreciation Event. Membership@gaylaw.org

  • Public Service & Policy – Reviews GLBT policies and positions and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors about whether GAYLAW should write or endorse amicus briefs, join coalitions, lobby legislators, etc. Policy@gaylaw.org

  • D.C. Bar Candidates Forum & Endorsements – Coordinates the D.C. Bar Candidates Forum, develops standards for review of the nominees and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding such nominees. Nominations@gaylaw.org

  • Attorney Referral – Recruits attorneys as needed and recommends to the Board of Directors ways to increase visibility and usage of the referral service. GAR@gaylaw.org

  • Whitman-Walker Clinic Volunteer - Volunteers at Whitman-Walker Clinic to assist people with HIV/AIDS prepare simple planning documents (Wills, Medical Directives and Powers of Attorney). Training and mentoring are available. Volunteer@gaylaw.org
